New project: Interactive Fiction “Witch Walks”

I’m working on an interactive fiction piece called ” Witch Walks”. The story will follow a witch making a graduation journey across the island of Olice. The player will need to make decisions about how far they travel each day, when they rest and when they spend and use their mana.

I’ve been toying around with a few project ideas lately. I regularly look around on Itch for interesting tools to experiment with. After starting a Decker game I’d hit a bit of a dead end with it. So I looked around for a few other tools. I eventually found this Ink/Gdevelop plugin and template.

Ink is an amazing narrative scripting language. I’ve used it quite a bit and participated in the Ink game jam a few years ago. While you can export a web based project with the Inky editor, you need to pair it with a game engine to power anything else. Unity was a bit much for my personal use so I never did much with it. GDevelop is a very accessible and open source tool. The template does all the hard work for me. Letting me trigger sound, visual changes and easily changes the visuals etc while I can use Ink to power the story.

I’ve gotten a bit more ambitious than I usually do. The game will track in the game phases of the moon. There are skill checks using a D6+Mana check and lots of random events. The main structure of the game is set out and I’ve scripted out the random events.

My next task is to try and get some content in for the main locations in the game. I’m filling in various random events too. I’m not going to set a release date for it yet…but keep your eyes peeled.
